How to Choose Ladies’ Waterproof Shoes for Irish Weather

Footwear Guides Sep 29 2026

In Ireland, a dry morning can turn into a wet walk home. If you’re choosing shoes for regular wear, it helps to think about where you’ll use them before looking at colours or brands.

Start with the label

“Waterproof” and “water-resistant” do not mean the same thing. A waterproof claim should be stated for the particular shoe, often with a named membrane. Water-resistant uppers may cope with a light shower but are not necessarily made for sustained rain. Check the individual product description: features can vary within the same brand.

Think about the walk

For errands and pavements, you may prefer a lower shoe that feels easy to wear all day. For longer walks, consider the tread, the ground you’ll cover and whether you want more coverage around the ankle. A waterproof upper does not stop water entering over the top of a low shoe, and no sole makes slippery ground risk-free.

Check the fit with your usual socks

Try the shoes with the socks you’ll actually wear. Your toes should have room, your heel should feel secure and the fastening should hold the shoe comfortably without pinching. Walk around indoors before deciding.

Our ladies’ outdoor footwear range is a useful place to compare styles. For a specific example, the ECCO Receptor XP 854343 is described as having waterproof GORE-TEX protection. Check its current sizes and details on the product page. If you’re deciding between two pairs, compare their individual specifications rather than assuming they offer the same protection.
